Milburn: How is the yarn produced? What's involved?

Whenever I talk about yarn production and what’s involved the reaction I get is “oh wow, I didn’t know”. So I thought I would pop it up here on the blog for you all to have a read, and I hope you find it interesting and insightful. It will also help explain why we don’t have all the yarn all of the time! Anyone who’s been involved in stock management will know how complicated it can be, trying to re-order with a long enough lead time for the item to be produced and shipped to you without losing the momentum...

Milburn: How did you choose your colours for this yarn?

My yarn colour inspiration comes from flowers and the environment. Most of the Milburn range has an equivalent shade in our hand-dyed yarns - I send off the shades to the dyers (both also Yorkshire-based, which is rather satisfying) and they match them, send them back to me for approval, and then if I approve they go ahead with the dyeing. In short (I'll write more about this in my next blog post), when Milburn first started we were limited to five shades because of spinning and dyeing minimums; that was really hard to choose. Our Milburn 4ply (and soon DK!) yarn blend is spun exclusively for us, and I always knew I wanted this to be the case - it would have been easy to just source a pure wool yarn of some sort and use that, but I wanted something to claim as my own. It does mean we’re beholden to the minimum order for a spin, which is around 350-500kg, but I felt it was worth the risk. To be honest, choosing it was pretty easy - I wanted super wash Bluefaced Leicester because it’s a stunning fibre, especially if you get...

New yarn klaxon: Pendle Chunky.. super-squishy merino..

The headline pretty much says it all really. We have a new yarn which is being released this Sunday (the 10th of December 2017), and it's SO good! (This ^^ is 'Dyepot Luck' for the colourway. More on that another time!) It's the same base as our other superwash merino yarns, hence it shares the same name, except it's chunky. You can actually hear it scrunch when you squidge it; at ECY towers we have quickly become totally smitten with it. It's an absolute joy to dye, squish, knit with, and wear.  (That ^^ is a new colourway which we've...

Introducing: more new Milburn 4ply!!

This has been a long time coming... we finally have our lovely new shades of Milburn 4ply! It takes the collection of shades up to 20, and fills in a few gaps I thought we had (like a proper green). Before I go any futher let me just tell you that a) these are all available on the Milburn 4ply section on the website, and b) I created a Flick album HERE with loads of lovely colour combination inspiration - have a look!  I'll start with the greens - we have Fern, which is a zingy yet earthy green, and...
